Helios, Zero Waste Pattern

kr 150

Helios is inspired by the traditional Japanese kimono.

The Helios concept is based on squares, triangles and cords that create shape and volume. Helios has several alternative cuts and adjustment options so that you can create different garments, silhouettes and a variable expression. The pattern is also very adaptable and has possibilities for hacks! This way you get a multi-functional garment that can hopefully suit several occasions and uses.

Zero Waste

The pattern is designed so that you do not need to print it on paper, but can easily draw the pattern directly on the fabric. It consists of rectangles, squares and angles, and is designed to leave as little fabric scraps as possible.

Material selection

Suitable fabrics are solid, woven fabrics with a light to medium weight. For example, linen, cotton poplin, khadi or crepe. Use a stiffer fabric with a lot of volume to emphasize an oversized shape, or a fabric with more drape for a more relaxed style. Helios is also well suited for patchwork and for recycled fabrics.

For View B you can use denim, corduroy or wool, for example. You can also make a quilted version with a pre-quilted fabric or quilt it yourself.

Linen is very suitable for View C for a laid-back dress option. If you want something more fancy, you can go for a silk organza!

Amount of substance depends on which view you choose and whether you adapt the pattern to your own size. You may also need more fabric if you use a fabric with a directional pattern.

For a standard size Helios you will need the following quantities:

View A 134 x 137 cm
View B 147 x 134 cm
View C 150 x 205 cm

To make a lined View B you will need the same amount of lining fabric. For a lined or quilted View B you will also need a separate bias tape to use as a edging on the raw edges of the jacket, you will need about 5 m.

Size

Helios is designed as a unisex garment in one adjustable size. The pattern can be easily scaled up or down to suit your own measurements and different fabric widths.

Since Helios is built with squares as a starting point, the pattern can easily be adjusted up or down in size by subtracting or adding the same number of centimeters on the front and back. If you change the size of view C, take the measurements for the front and back and multiply by 1.5 to get the width of the skirt parts. The skirt can also be easily shortened or lengthened, the same applies to the sleeves.

Helios has a wide fit with drop shoulders and should have a lot of freedom of movement. The circumference of a standard size Helios top is 136 cm. The recommended allowance is a minimum of 20 cm, meaning that the standard size fits up to a chest/waist measurement of 116 cm.
